Emvatis, according to Vitruvius (born c. 80–70 BC, died after c. 15 BC) who first used this term, was a conventional unit. By using this unit the Ancient Greeks determined the proportions (which in Greek are called ‘analogies’) of the temples and in general of all the sacred and public buildings. Emvatis corresponded to the lower half-diameter of a Doric pillar or the whole base diameter of an Ionic pillar. Modern researchers calculate in various ways emvatis’ sub-divisions; however, Vitruvius informs us that it was separated in six parts. Greeks believed that proportions (analogies) of the human body where the foot is a sixth of the height of the body, represent the perfect symmetry.
